Sydney Counselling – A Brief Overview Of The Counselling Process

If you have never been to a Sydney counselling session before (or a counselling session anywhere , for that matter), you may not be familiar with how psychotherapy or counselling works and the counselling process. (you may want to read the ‘What Is Counselling” page for explanation of the terms ‘Counselling’ and ‘Psychotherapy’ and general information about Counselling. In this first article we will address the first counselling or psychotherapy session.

Sydney Counselling – The First Counselling Session

Your first counselling session is a helpful opportunity for the counsellor and the client to get to know each other and , very importantly , for the client to get to feel comfortable. It often takes a few sessions for the client to feel totally at ease and comfortable enough to discuss issues ,concerns and worries they not previously have spoken about before. It takes time to build trust and a ‘space’ where the client begins to feel ‘safe’ and comfortable in sharing. Obviously every psychotherapist and counsellor is different and there are many of approaches and ‘therapies’ offered. What you have envisaged or read about may differ when it comes to seeing a particular psychotherapist or counsellor and there will be differences in how a counsellor begins the counselling session. Some counsellors’ may want to establish ground rules’ or gather background information whilst others may prefer to more quickly commence the session and let the client take the lead. It is always useful to briefly discuss with the counsellor on the telephone your expectations and needs regarding counselling and get a feel for the type of approach that a particular counsellor may take.

Sydney Counselling – After the initial session

Depending on the type of psychotherapist or counsellor that the client meets with, they may be given ‘homework’ or follow up exercises which may be discussed in the following counselling session. This could include journaling or written work, time spent thinking about and reflecting on a particular issue, reading articles, or possibly carrying out behavioural tasks and exercises set by the counsellor during the session. This ‘homework’ ,for want of a better term can be very helpful and will allow the client to get more out of their following session .

Hi my name is Elizabeth. I am a ACA and CAPA accredited counsellor and psychotherapist with over 3 years experience. I offer counselling and psychotherapy to individuals and couples for short and long-term work. Sharing what troubles you in a caring, professional setting is a very positive step towards creating change and a better life for yourself. My role is to help support you and steadily bring about the positive changes you seek in your life. This may relate to issues that have arisen recently or it may be things that have troubled and concerned you for many years. I work with the belief that you know how to support yourself and how to solve your own problems, but sometimes you may get stuck in an unhelpful pattern and need someone else to help you to get out of it.
Counselling Parramatta -About Counselling

Counselling is about being able to talk about what is happening in your life in a confidential, very safe and private way.The counsellor is very skilled in listening and you will not be judged. Counsellors are specially trained to understand your difficulties and work with you to help you work through those problems and issues.
Counselling Parramatta – What Counselling Is Not

Occasionally people that seek out counselling do so hoping to find advice. In general , counsellor or psychotherapist will not offer advice or tell you what to do. The counselling process is designed so that the client will find their own solution and gain insights into the issues that bought them to counselling initially .The client will receive support and guidance from the therapist or counsellor. Counselling is not meant to be a ‘quick fix’ , but might , for example , aim to empower the client to look at their situation in new ways or explore the underlying reasons as to why they feel the way they do.

Counselling Parramatta -How many Counselling sessions will you need?

This can be a difficult question to answer ,however it is reasonable to assume that although you can achieve progress in the your first counselling or psychotherapy session, the majority of people will need more than one session to help bring about the changes they are looking for in their lives. Generally speaking , the amount of sessions required will vary from individual to individual. For some people they may require just three or four counselling sessions, whereas other people can see a counsellor for many months or even years. It is a good idea to discuss this with the counsellor on your first visit.

Marriage Counselling Sydney

Welcome to the Marriage Counselling Sydney page of the Counselling Sydney website.

The term ‘Marriage Counselling’ is interchangeable with the term ‘Couples Counselling’ . In our lives our closest and most intimate relationship is generally our marriage or relationship with our partner. When this relationship no longer ‘works’ the impact on our lives can be devastating and our whole way of functioning and interacting in the world can be affected. Our very well being ,health and happiness can suffer. For some people their very sense of self-worth and identity has its foundation based on the quality of our relationships. When these primary relationships change our mental health can be severely affected and we can feel despair.

Marriage Counselling Sydney – Symptoms and Indicators of Marriage Issues.

Communication between the couple may have broken down

The Sexual relationship has diminished or ended or causes problems

Lack of resolution of disagreements and arguments

Violence or threats of violence

Anxiety ,depression or other health issues recur

Trust within the relationship is diminished or broken

Marriage Counselling Sydney .To Locate A Professional Counsellor Or Psychotherapist Near You Enter Your Postcode In The Search Box or try our Advanced Search.

Relationships can suffer with the pressures and strains of daily life . Love may change or disappear and may be replaced by feelings of resentment or anger. Commonly, each partner can view the situation quite differently . This difference can be dependent on their own earlier experiences of family life. One partner may view the changes within the relationship with concern ,even despair, whilst the other partner may these changes as being temporary.

Marriage Counselling Sydney -When is the right time for Couple Counselling?

Arguments and disagreements continue within the relationship without resolution

Discussion within the couple becomes difficult .Conversations may become confused and rage or anger may arise frequently.

One or both of the couple believe that separation or divorce may be the only option to resolve the situation

The sexual side of the relationship lacks passion , enjoyment or no longer exists

A diminishing of trust . This may be as a result of financial issues , an affair, or secretiveness

Marriage Counselling Sydney – Additional Considerations

It is generally (though not always) preferable that both of the couple attend the marriage counselling sessions together. If there is domestic violence or fear then this may well not be the case and counselling can be undertaken with one partner .

Negotiation and healthy conflict resolution skills are the foundation of healthy relationships. Whilst arguments may always occur , being able to negotiate and work through them is very important.

When two people enter into a relationship the bring with them their own values and beliefs. Both partners must feel ‘heard’ in order to thrive within the relationship. This often mean developing new communication skills.

Within any relationship ,but particularly a relationship between a couple it is very important that differences are acknowledged. If not the couple may ‘merge’ or one partner may be ‘unheard’. Sometimes one partner may dominate while the other may ‘disappear’.

Disagreements and arguments are a healthy and essential part of any relationship . They can energise it if carried out in a healthy and skillful way. Indirect or covert anger and domestic violence are destructive.

Marriage Counselling can assist with understanding the messages around and about conflict. These may have inherited from our family of origin . Counselling can offer couples the opportunity to learn valuable new skills.
